L-3 Communications Security and Detection Systems of Woburn, Mass., sought a software solution to aid in its security goals in developing an Advanced Container Security Device (ACSD) for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Arroyo Sciences, ViaSpace Inc.’s wholly-owned subsidiary in Pasadena, Calif., has joined the L-3 engineering team on the ACSD project, providing its sensor data fusion software and Shine inference engine technology.

The next-generation maritime cargo- container security device is intended to enhance the security of U.S. ports by continuously tracking a sealed cargo container’s journey, from departure to final destination. ACSD will detect security breaches and unauthorized access, and alert authorities to potential threats, smuggling, theft, human trafficking, and stowaways.

Arroyo Sciences software uses advanced algorithms and methods to detect container breaches. It uses the company’s Active State Model and sensor-data fusion technology based on the Shine inference engine, which was developed by NASA at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for space missions.
