The U.S. Navy needed graphic displays for its fleet of attack and ballistic missile submarines. Navy personnel found their solution at Azonix Corp. in Billerica, Mass.
Experts from the Naval Sea Systems Command and the Northrop Grumman Corp. Sperry Marine division in Charlottesville, Va., will install the Azonix Nautilus 20-inch Smart Display with integrated computer on the AN/BPS 15 and 16 navigation radar system aboard the submarines.
The smart displays provide navigation and collision avoidance visualization from the radar sources and are used together with the Electronic Chart Display and Information System-Navy (ECDIS-N).

The Nautilus uses a custom KVM switch to change between the two radar signals and can be either console- or bulkhead-mounted.
The Nautilus enhances ship safety during surfaced and submerged operations in crowded waters. Its design provides for high-performance, low power consumption, and low thermal output in a small footprint, Azonix officials say. The Nautilus withstands shock, vibration, salt, fog, drip, fungus, acoustic noise, and EMI.
The Nautilus uses an open architecture to support replacement components and newer technologies. The result is an extended life cycle in comparison to other rugged computers in the industry.
