U.S. Navy adopts ViaSat MIDS JTRS and tactical networking terminals

September 1, 2007

Personnel at the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) in San Diego required non-recurring terminals to support government air worthiness testing related to the Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS).

They settled on production transition terminals from ViaSat Inc. in Carlsbad, Calif., entering into undefinitized contracts worth as much as $19 million.

Navy personnel have contracted technology firms to engineer JTRS compliance into the next-generation MIDS, both in support of a software-defined radio approach and to protect the investment in thousands of installed MIDS low-volume terminals (LVT). ViaSat is one of two U.S. government-qualified developers of the MIDS JTRS terminal, designed to be plug-and-play interchangeable for U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force platforms using MIDS LVT.

The MIDS JTRS terminal is scheduled to complete first article qualification testing late this year.
