nLight concludes acquisition of Liekki to boost presence in optical fiber market

January 1, 2008

VANCOUVER, Wash.—Semiconductor laser maker nLight Corp. in Vancouver, Wash., has completed its acquisition of specialty optical fiber manufacturer Liekki Corp. in Lohja, Finland.

Officials of nLight, a manufacturer of high-power semiconductor lasers, first announced their plan to acquire Liekki in October to bolster nLight’s presence in the optical fiber market. Terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

“While the acquisition officially closed on November 9th, we have already been actively working with the Liekki team to integrate them into the nLight strategy, organization, and future plans,” says Scott Keeney, nLight’s president and chief executive officer. “Liekki’s direct nanoparticle deposition (DND) fiber technology process gives us a unique capability.”

Liekki Corp. designs specialty optical fibers and fiber subassemblies (optical engine modules) for fiber amplifiers and lasers using its proprietary DND technology. Liekki products are used in industrial, aerospace, medical, military, and telecommunications applications.

“The combination of our technology and teams will provide customers with a complete supply chain from semiconductor lasers and fibers to optical modules,” says William Willson, managing director of the nLight Fiber Division. “Liekki will bring its experience in fibers and modules; a unique, patented direct nanoparticle deposition (DND) fiber technology process; and a specialized manufacturing facility, which scales efficiently.”
