Implant Sciences’ explosives detector systems to be used at Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

A high-ranking official of the Chinese Ministry of Public Security indicated that terrorism posed the biggest threat to the holding of a successful Beijing Olympic Games this year. Considering that it is a large gathering of people from virtually all countries, the Olympic Games is considered a big target for potential terrorist activity.

As a result of this concern, China’s leaders require, and are actively seeking, highly accurate and highly sensitive systems with which to detect explosive devices. Government officials found such a solution at Implant Sciences Corp. in Wakefield, Mass.

To date, Implant Sciences Corp. has shipped six units of its Quantum Sniffer BTS Benchtop explosives detection system (QS-BTS) for delivery to the Beijing police. The QS-BTS, along with previously shipped Quantum Sniffer H100 and H150 portable explosives detectors, is expected to be used in connection with security and anti-terrorism efforts during the 2008 Olympic Games to be held in Beijing.

The QS-BTS, a portable, handheld detection device, combines the company’s patented Vortex collector technology for sample collection and Quantum Sniffer technology for explosives detection.

Vortex collector technology offers the ability to collect samples of vapors and particulate matter in non-contact and contact modes. Quantum Sniffer detection technology enables the detection of nanogram (i.e., parts per trillion) amounts of a variety of explosive substances commonly used by terrorists.
