BAE Systems chosen to upgrade situational awareness on military aircraft

January 1, 2008

Leaders at the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves sought to partner with a technology provider to upgrade the A-10A Thunderbolt II. The goal of the update is to increase aircraft personnel’s situational awareness and targeting control.

To accomplish this goal, they elicited the help of engineers at BAE Systems in Johnson City, N.Y. According to the contract, BAE Systems will modify more than 100 Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve A-10A aircraft stationed around the United States before the end of this year.

The pending upgrades will improve pilot awareness of the position of friendly ground forces. It will also automatically transfer target coordinates within the aircraft’s internal systems and to other aircraft on the network, thereby reducing pilot workload.

BAE Systems engineers are developing the aircraft modification equipment in its Johnson City, N.Y., facility. They will integrate, within its on-site integration laboratory, a multifunction color cockpit display with the targeting pod prior to installation and flight testing in order to maximize cost and schedule performance.
