U.S. Coast Guard chooses FLIR Systems TALON

October 1, 2008

Officers recognized the need to enhance the U.S. Coast Guard’s airborne force, interdiction, and search-and-rescue missions with advanced, stable sensors. They selected technology from FLIR Systems Inc. in Portland, Ore.

FLIR Systems won a $23.1 million delivery order from the U.S. Coast Guard as part of the Electro-Optical Sensor System (ESS) program. FLIR is contracted to deliver variants of its TALON stabilized multi-sensor system, which will be installed on HH-60 and HH-65 helicopters.

Coast Guard officials previously ordered multi-sensor units that were fielded in 2007 to provide enhanced detection capabilities to the Coast Guard in the war on drugs and homeland defense.

“This contract builds on FLIR’s excellent relationship with the U.S. Coast Guard and demonstrates the capabilities and extreme ruggedness of our systems,” says Earl R. Lewis, president and chief executive officer of FLIR.

Work will be performed in FLIR’s facility in North Billerica, Mass.
