ITT night-vision tubes selected for U.S. military aircraft

October 1, 2008

Officials at ARINC Inc. in Annapolis, Md., needed 16-millimeter image intensifier tubes for its work on avionics systems for the U.S. military. They found the optimal solution at ITT Corp.’s Night Vision division in Roanoke, Va.

Engineers at ITT Night Vision, working under the terms of a $14 million order from ARINC Inc., are delivering 16-millimeter imaging intensifiers to be integrated into the Panoramic Night Vision Goggle (PNVG) and the Quad-Eye.

These aircraft-based night-vision systems operate with four image intensifier tubes, rather than the traditional two night-vision intensifier tubes, to expand field of view for users.

The PNVGs will be used by U.S. Air Force and Army personnel, whereas the Quad-Eye will serve Navy aviators as part of the Joint Helmet-Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS).

The 16-millimeter tube also is used in ITT’s Enhanced Night Vision Goggle (ENVG), the first sensor-fused, helmet-mounted monocular to combine infrared and image intensification imagery, produced for the U.S. Army.
