United Arab Emirates chooses FLIR Systems technology

October 1, 2008

Officials in the General Headquarters of the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense sought advanced sensor technology to aid in area counter-smuggling and counter-terror missions.

They selected Star SAFIRE III stabilized, multi-sensor systems from FLIR Systems Inc. in Portland, Ore.

FLIR has received a $6.3 million order from the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense for Star SAFIRE III units to be installed on fixed-wing surveillance platforms. The order is a follow-on option to a previously signed contract between FLIR and the General Headquarters. This $6.3 million option brings the total value of the contract award to more than $34 million within the past year, says a company representative.

“This order, representing a continuation of the long-standing relationship between FLIR and the USA’s strong ally, the United Arab Emirates, demonstrates the outstanding performance of our products in harsh operating conditions,” says Earl R. Lewis, president and chief executive officer of FLIR Systems.

Work on this order will take place at FLIR’s facilities in Portland, Ore., and deliveries are expected to be completed within 12 months.
