Officers in the Australian army sought an unmanned aerial system small enough to fit in soldiers’ backpacks. They found their solution at Elbit Systems Ltd. in Haifa, Israel.

Elbit won a multimillion-dollar contract to supply Skylark I unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the Australian army. This agreement marks Australia’s third order for Skylark UAVs from Elbit.

The Skylark I mini-UAV system is a man-pack configuration for day and night observation and data collection from distances of up to 10 miles. Soldiers in the field are able to launch the unmanned aircraft.

Several armies worldwide use the Skylark I, which operates in areas such as Afghanistan and Iraq, says a representative.
