Personnel at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane Division in Crane, Ind. (NSWC-Crane), needed handheld imagers for Special Operations Forces (SOF). They found their solution at FLIR Systems Inc. in Portland, Ore.
FLIR Systems’s executives, in response to a $48 million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract from NSWC-Crane, are delivering the company’s Recon III long-range, handheld imagers. FLIR Systems also won a $300,000 initial delivery order under this contract.

FLIR Systems are delivering the handheld imager units under this contract to the United States Special Operations Command to equip SOF teams with a Hand Held Imaging-Long Range (HHI-LR) capability.
FLIR Systems’ Recon III lightweight thermal binocular features digital zoom, a laser pointer, a digital magnetic compass, a GPS link, and a picture-over-picture capability for situational awareness. The solution combines a longwave, uncooled imager and midwave indium antimonide sensor for long-range viewing.
