Barco provides rugged HD display systems for Patriot missile defense

December 1, 2009

Engineers at Raytheon Co. needed 30-inch HD rugged displays for the Patriot air and missile defense system they are integrating for the U.S. Army. They found their solution from Barco in Duluth, Ga.

Barco’s rugged, flat-panel monitor technology will be part of the Patriot Battle Management Command and Control (BMC4I) system. Within the units, Barco’s Patriot HD display technology consists of two modular, rugged information display stations, each driving a dual-head console with 30-inch Barco LCDs, displays that have been designed to meet harsh military shock-vibration standards.

Barco’s HD-30 military LCD display meets Patriot environmental requirements, while introducing flat panel touch-screen technology. The size of the rugged LCD displays will help address Patriot’s current technology refresh objectives and convert from hard switches to digital, touch-screen-based operation. Patriot is an air and missile defense system that defends against tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and advanced aircraft.

The system’s BMC4I, which communicates with launching stations, other Patriot batteries, and higher command headquarters, are the only manned stations in a Patriot fire unit. The HD-30 is an addition to Barco’s existing series of rugged HD displays. It has NextWindow touch technology and high resolution, enabling Patriot operators to work with crisp and accurate images of the system’s legacy hardware.

Barco received its first production orders for the complete visualization solution in July 2009. In conjunction with Raytheon, a five-year agreement stipulates further development and production of the Patriot visualization subsystem.
