Turkish Navy selects ITT radar approach control system

Officials in the Turkish Ministry of National Defence (MND) needed a radar system for the Cengiz Topel airbase. They found their solution at ITT Corp. in White Plains, N.Y.

MND officials issued a $9.2 million contract to ITT to supply a fixed-site complete radar approach control (RAPCON) system through prime contractor Eriktronik Engineering in Ankara, Turkey. The contract calls for the delivery of a terminal air surveillance radar and PAR-2000 precision approach radar, in addition to spare parts, training, and installation.

The Turkish MND has previously procured from ITT Radar Systems-Gilfillan ITT Radar Systems in Van Nuys, Calif., 13 radar systems, including 10 RAPCONs for the Turkish Air Force. ITT engineers anticipate delivering the first RAPCON for the Turkish Navy in early 2010.

The RAPCON air traffic control (ATC) radar used to identify, sequence, and separate approaching aircraft; provide guidance for final approach and through air defense corridors and zones; and coordinate identification. Offered in fixed, transportable, and mobile configurations, the system is capable of identifying aircraft at a radius of up to 60 nautical miles with primary radar, and up to 250 nautical miles using secondary radar.
