Dell targets military applications with introduction of rugged computer laptop

ROUND ROCK, Texas–Dell Inc. is seeking to join the ranks of rugged computer makers such as Panasonic, General Dynamics Itronix Corp., and DRS Tactical Systems with its introduction of the Latitude E6400 XFR rugged laptop. Dell’s new rugged computer features ballistic armor and protection from dust and moisture for military, homeland security, and first responder applications.

The harsh-environment Latitude E6400 XFR rugged computers are designed for the military, first responders, oil and gas exploration, manufacturing floors, field technicians, and homeland security.

The rugged Dell computer can withstand not only harsh environments, but also powered-down drops from as high as four feet, as well as drops from as high as three feet with the rugged laptop running.

These new military computers are designed to protect against dust and liquids with compression gaskets; are engineered and independently tested to MIL-STD 810F; integrate easily into existing computing environments; employ Intel Core 2 Duo processors; use thermal management to withstand temperature extremes; and have extended field use batteries.

This rugged military computer is 2.2 inches thick and weighs 8.5 pounds. It offers in-vehicle docking, a 12-cell rugged battery slice, a legacy I/O adapter, and a 14.1-inch-wide display that is viewable in direct sunlight.
