Harris Corp. adopts Objective Interface Systems middleware for Falcon III

September 1, 2009

Harris Corp. engineers needed communications middleware for its family of Falcon III software-defined radios. They found their solution at Objective Interface Systems (OIS), a provider of communications middleware for software-defined radio (SDR) applications located in Tyson’s corner, Va.

ORBexpress middleware from OIS serves as the communications foundation of Harris Corp.’s Falcon III software-defined radios. ORBexpress is the only Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) communications middleware that has passed SCA certification in fielded radios, according to a company representative.

“As SCA-certified CORBA middleware, ORBexpress provides an essential communications foundation between SCA CORBA elements implemented across our Falcon III family of radios,” says Mark Turner, director of engineering at Harris Corp.

The advanced Falcon III military communications devices are the first Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Software Communications Architecture (SCA)-based radios to be certified for sending and receiving voice and data over U.S. tactical military satellites, says a representative.

“Harris Corp.’s Falcon III radios are agile, secure, and widely deployed,” says Joe Jacob, senior vice president of OIS.

Falcon III radios enable the secure transmission of information to the mobile warfighter. Harris has shipped 50,000 Falcon III AN/PRC-152 radios to date.
