Military data storage specialist Dot Hill Systems Corp. in Longmont, Colo., is partnering with Phoenix International Systems in Orange, Calif., to develop and build a ruggedized data storage system for two major U.S. airborne military surveillance systems.
Dot Hill and Phoenix International have signed an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement to integrate Dot Hill’s 3000 series redundant array of independent disks (RAID) controller with Phoenix International rugged data storage technology for deployment on the Northrop Grumman Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint-STARS) aircraft, as well as the Boeing Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) surveillance aircraft.

Phoenix International is a longtime data storage supplier for Joint-STARS and AWACS, and will use the Dot Hill 8-gigabit Fibre Channel RAID controller in its storage management system for the Joint STARS long-range, air-to-ground surveillance system, which is designed to locate, classify, and track ground targets during the day, at night, and in all kinds of weather. AWACS provides surveillance, command and control, and communications for military aircraft as a kind of air traffic controller in the sky.
“Dot Hill’s rock-solid 3000 series RAID controller technology has proven to be a perfect fit for our storage solutions and the company has proven to be a valuable go- to-market partner for us in the defense industry,” says Amos Deacon III, president of Phoenix International.
