ENCLOSURES AND CHASSIS: Electronic enclosures for Raytheon shipboard electronics on Zumwalt-class destroyers to come from Gichner

Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems officials needed modular electronic enclosures for the first two U.S. Navy DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class destroyers. They found their solution from Gichner Shelter Systems in Dallastown, Pa. Raytheon awarded Gichner, a business unit of Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc. in San Diego, a $2.85 million contract for three electronic enclosures and chassis for the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) and USS Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001).

The electronic enclosures provide isolation for shock, vibration, and electromagnetic interference in addition to supplying power, cooling, and security for Zumwalt commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based mission system equipment.

The electronic enclosures enable more than 200 individual COTS electronics cabinets to be integrated and tested as subsystems before being delivered as stand-alone electronic enclosures to the shipyard. Raytheon is prime integrator for all electronic and combat systems for the Zumwalt-class destroyer program.

The DDG 1000 destroyer is the Navy's next-generation, multi-mission, destroyer. Zumwalt's advanced mission capabilities give the ship versatility in a variety of operational environments and reduce manning requirements. The open-architecture design enables commonality across the U.S. Navy's family of ships.
