Military avionics designers at The Boeing Company’s Defense, Space & Security segment needed replacement head-up displays (HUDs) for the C-17 Globemaster III cargo jet. They found their solution from Elbit Systems of America LLC in Fort Worth, Texas. Elbit avionics engineers will develop the C-17 replacement head-up display (RHUD) for the U.S. Air Force C-17 fleet.
The replacement HUD for the cargo jet makes provisions for sensor fusion and related avionics upgrades, as well as enhanced pilot situational awareness and approach-to-runway safety in bad weather and other reduced-visibility conditions. The C-17 is designed to operate from long or short runways of pavement, dirt, or other unimproved surfaces to carry cargo or deliver troops and equipment near the front lines of battle.
