The NexGen Infrared missile warning system (MWS) from Northrop Grumman Corp. Electronic Systems in Rolling Meadows, Ill., received U.S. Air Force authorization for full-rate production. Northrop Grumman designed the MWS for large Air Force aircraft, such as the C-17, EC-130J, and HC/MC-130J. Infrared MWS detects heat from the plumes of incoming missiles, but does not rely on the hot missile plume for detection. Its infrared sensors can detect other aspects of incoming missiles. The infrared MWS also provides directional information on incoming missiles to enable target aircraft to deploy decoys or make evasive maneuvers.
