POWER ELECTRONICS: Multilayer varistor that responds to 8-kilovolt ESD strikes in less than one nanosecond introduced by AVX

January 1, 2012

AVX Corp. in Fountain Inn, S.C., is introducing the AntennaGuard MLV ultra-low capacitance 0603 device. The new release is designed to respond to electro-static discharge (ESD) strikes in less time than one nanosecond for automotive applications, including RF circuits, sensors, GPS antennas, and high-speed signal transmission lines. The AEC Q200-qualified Automotive AntennaGuard MLV devices deliver low insertion loss, low leakage current, and are more reliable than diode options, according to AVX Corp. officials.

“The AntennaGuard also minimizes the parasitic capacitance and signal distortion, making the most of the signal strength and speed,” explains Jeremiah Woods, global marketing manager for circuit protection at AVX Corp. Meeting 27.5-volt DC jump start requirements, the AntennaGuard MLV provides an ESD rating of 25 kilovolts, and is able to withstand successive 1k strikes at 8 kilovolts per IEC 61000-4-2.
