MicroDisplay unveils new LCD approach

December 1, 1997

Scientists at MicroDisplay Corp. in San Pablo, Calif., are implementing a new method of producing color on small-form-factor liquid crystal displays that uses diffraction in a similar way that a prism separates white light into its component rainbow of colors. MicroDisplay`s color displays use small diffraction gratings to generate a reflective mode display with saturated color pixels. Company experts use semiconductor technology for the gratings, which are part of the circuit design sent to a foundry when fabricating the semiconductor chips.
