GROTON, Conn., 25 June 2012. General Dynamics Electric Boat, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), won an $11 million U.S. Navy contract modification for research and development of advanced submarine technologies for current and future undersea platforms.
Electric Boat engineers will undertake advanced submarine research-and-development studies in support of a wide range of technology areas, including manufacturability, maintainability, survivability, hydrodynamics, acoustics, and materials. General Dynamics will also conduct research and development work in: hull integrity, performance, ship control, logistics, weapons handling, and safety. The program supports near-term insertion of Virginia-class technology; identification of Ohio-class replacement technology options; future submarine concepts; and core technologies.
The contract, originally awarded Nov. 2010, has a potential value of $711 million over five years, if all options are exercised and funded.
Work on this contract modification will engage Electric Boat's Groton, Conn., engineering and design organization, with more than 3,000 employees working on all facets of the submarine life cycle, from concept formulation and design through construction, maintenance, and modernization. Additional work will be performed in Newport News, Va.
