NUREMBERG, Germany, 26 Feb. 2013. The PC/104 Consortium, the embedded computing organization that maintains specifications supporting the PC/104 form factor, has approved enhancements to the PCI/104-Express and PCI Express/104 specifications, with provisions for PCI Express Generation 2 and Generation 3.

Consortium officials made the announcement this week at the Embedded World 2013 conference and trade show in Nuremberg, Germany. The enhancements to the specifications align PCI/104-Express and PCI Express/104 with performance improvements to PCI Express 3.0, consortium officials say.

Enhancements make possible data transfer rates as fast as 2, 8, 16, and 32 gigabytes per second on PCI/104-Express and PCI Express/104 x1, x4, x8, and x16 links. The specifications preserve connector technology and footprint.

In addition to PC/104, the C/104 Consortium administers specifications for PC/104-Plus, PCI-104, EBX, and EPIC. The group added layout examples for the different PCI Express links, USB 3.0, and SATA to assist developers, officials say.

Products based on this revision of the specification for data-intensive applications with fewer required PCI Express links are rolling out as PC/104 suppliers take advantage of the higher performance interconnect capability with PCI Express Gen 2 or Gen 3, consortium officials say.
