WARREN, Mich., 7 May 2013. U.S. Army armored combat vehicle designers will brief industry next week on current and future vetronics research efforts aimed at keeping vehicle crews safe in attacks from a wide variety of anti-armor weapons.
Officials of the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center's (TARDEC's) Ground Systems Survivability group in Warren, Mich., will discuss the group's programs, budgets, and acquisition strategies through 2019.
Topics include:
-- hit avoidance involving active and passive protection against tank-fired projectiles, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs);
-- penetration avoidance involving armor and material solutions to counter kinetic-energy anti-armor weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), fragmentation anti-armor weapons, shaped charge jet (SCJ) warheads, and explosively formed penetrators (EFPs);
-- kill avoidance involving fire suppression and protection, as well as vision protection from lasers;
-- mechanical countermine, and blast mitigation; and
-- vehicle occupant protection involving seats, restraints, and sensors. All briefings will be for official use only (FOUO), Army officials say.
Briefings will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on 16 May 2013 -- next Thursday -- at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base dining facility, Building 164, 43156 Wagner St., in Harrison Township, Mich., northeast of Detroit.
Briefings are to inform industry and colleges of the TARDEC GSS organization and goals, as well as to identify potential partners for GSS programs, Army officials say.
TARDEC GSS identifies, develops, and integrates technologies that will protect ground vehicle systems from a wide range of threats through data analysis and modeling, technology demonstrations, studies, and performance evaluations.
