QUANTICO, Va., 10 June 2013. U.S. Marine Corps leaders are reaching out to industry to find companies able to build an add-on power inverter to Humvee light vehicles to supply AC power to Marines in the field for operating electronic systems and recharging batteries.
Officials of the Marine Corps Systems Command at Quantico Marine Base, Va., issued a sources-sought notice last Thursday (HMMWVOBVPINVERTER) for the On-Board Vehicle (HMMWV) Power for the High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle power electronics program, otherwise known as OBVP-INVERTER.
The OBVP-Inverter, when installed in a vehicle, will provide 5 to 19 kilowatts of electrical power at 120 and 208 volts AC at 60 Hz when the vehicle is stationary, and 2.5 kilowatts when the Humvee is in motion. The Marines want mechanical power from the diesel engine to make electrical power by the 400 Amp alternator feeding inverter.
The Marines are issuing this notice to determine is small businesses are capable of designing and building such a vehicle power inverter, If such a device would be affordable for the Marines, and how long such a project might take.
