WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB, Ohio, 15 July 2013. U.S. Air Force researchers are ready to launch a new program next month to develop adaptive spectrum warfare technologies to enable warfighting in contested and denied areas.

Officials of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Sensor's Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, last week issued a presolicitation (BAA-RQKS-2013-0003) for the Advanced Novel Spectrum Warfare Environment Research (ANSWER) program. The ANSWER program previously was known as the Net-Enabled Electronic Warfare Technologies (NEWT) program.

The ANSWER program will involve electronic, optical, navigation, and cyber warfare technologies for future layered defensive systems for anti-access, anti-denial (A2/AD) scenarios. A2/AD describes a layered defense across air, land, sea, space, and cyber in complimentary layers of security such as diesel submarines, advanced mines, anti-ship, and anti-satellite weapons.

The AFRL's ANSWER program will cover radio frequency (RF) spectrum warfare, trusted cyber-resilient avionics systems engineering, position navigation and timing (PNT) in contested/denied environments, and electro-optics countermeasures.

AFRL researchers say they expect to issue a broad agency announcement (BAA) for the ANSWER program sometime between 30 Aug. and 16 Sept. 2013. The program's first task will be called Reconfigurable Threat Assessment Tool for EA Technique Development.
