DAHLGREN, Va., 13 Aug. 2013. U.S. Navy is asking embedded computing suppliers and distributors to provide 51 ZestET1 Gigabit Ethernet TCP/IP Offload Engine and field-programmable gate array (FPGA) board, which are designed and manufactured by Orange Tree Technologies Ltd. in Didcot, England.

Officials of the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Va., issued a request for quote Monday (N00178-13-Q-4874) for 51 ZestET1 Spartan-3A FPGA Ethernet Board with XC3S1400A and 64MB FPGA boards, which are for a for a variety of naval weapons research.

The ZestET1 is a low cost, easy to use, very high performance Gigabit Ethernet TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) and FPGA Module that provides a universal interface to connect devices to a network at gigabit speed. It sustains a data rate of 100 megabytes per second in each direction.

The board measures 50 by 75 millimeters, and is for embedded systems and OEM equipment. It features a user programmable Xilinx Spartan-3A FPGA with as many as 1.4 million system gates for user programming.

The FPGA can be programmed from on-board Flash, Ethernet or JTAG and is capable of running soft-core processors and higher level protocols such as Gigabit Ethernet Vision and Industrial Ethernet. It also can function as a programmable interface to external devices, for processing data on the fly, high speed processing of streaming data, and controlling external devices.

Fitted onto the ZestET1 module is Orange Tree’s Gigabit Ethernetxpedite (Gigabit Ethernetx) chip that delivers hardware UDP and TCP/IP offload (TOE), Tri-Speed Ethernet, an Ethernet MAC and embedded web server. The ET1’s Gigabit Ethernetx device supports IPv4, UDP, and TCP transport layer protocols with higher level protocols and applications supported using the companion FPGA.

The Gigabit Ethernetx integrated hardware TCP/IP stack including hardware UDP and TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) removes the network protocol processing burden from the companion FPGA or embedded processor.

Resource-intensive memory copies, checksum computation, and reassembling of out-of-order packets are handled by the Gigabit Ethernetx hardware TOE. This enables designers to use relatively small and low-cost processors, or to use the device as a soft-core within the companion FPGA, with its resources being allocated to running applications, rather than handling network traffic, Orange Tree officials say.

Navy officials are conducting an online competitive reverse auction, which will end at 2 p.m. eastern time on 22 Aug. 2013 to find a supplier of the FPGA boards. The auction is being conducted on www.FedBid.com.

The Navy requires new equipment only, with no remanufactured or "gray market" items, and covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
