HIAWATHA, Iowa, 23 Feb. 2014. Crystal Group Inc. in Hiawatha, Iowa, is introducing the RSS13S17 JBOD 1U rugged data storage system for military operations and other demanding mission-critical applications.

Crystal Group provides a SAS direct attached storage array that is 17 inches deep. With an all aluminum chassis, the RSS13S17 provides high capability and storage capacity in a small rugged package, company officials say.

The unit holds as many as six removable 2.5-inch SATA/SAS hard drives or three removable 3.5-inch SATA/SAS hard drives. The RSS13S17 contains rear I/O for power and SAS connections.

The rugged data storage system operates in temperatures from -15 to 55 degrees Celsius with hard drives, and from -50 to 55 C with solid-state drives. It also will operate at altitudes to 12,500 feet, and can be stored at altitudes to 40,000 feet.

The unit withstands the effects of humidity, shock, and vibration per MIL-STD-810. It measures 1.75 inches high by 17.75 inches wide by 17 inches deep, and weighs 10 to 12 pounds, depending on drives.

"As customer storage needs increase, additional units may be connected together in a daisy chain manner," says Chip Thurston, technical director at Crystal Group.
