ARLINGTON, Va., 28 July 2014. U.S. military researchers are asking industry to develop situational awareness of wireless tactical networks with an eye to fortifying network control against attack or other sources of misinformation.

Officials of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., have released a solicitation to industry for the second and third phases of the Wireless Network Defense (WND) program, which includes applying techniques to a representative wireless platform.

The WND program is developing new technology to protect the control protocols of wireless networks from advanced attacks or other forms of compromise.

The program focuses on protecting the protocols at the network and medium access control (MAC) layers of the network stack that coordinate among resources such as spectrum, time, and power, and delivery of information.

This kind of technology is expected to improve the robustness of wireless networks and provide a reliable foundation on which to build the next generation of wireless systems, DARPA officials say.

The program consists of three phases. The first phase, due to complete in October, pursued Red Team capabilities; techniques to estimate the reliability of the information shared by network nodes; and techniques that minimize the degradation of network performance in the presence of uncooperative or misbehaving nodes.

DARPA now is looking for companies to participate in the second and third phases of the WND program to develop a system prototype and laboratory demonstration, as well as over-the-air field demonstration. Several awards are expected for this effort.
