Navy surveys industry for new technologies to detect trace amounts of explosives on surfaces

INDIAN HEAD, Md., 21 Nov. 2014. U.S. Navy explosives-detection efforts are asking industry for ideas on non-vapor-collecting ways of detecting trace amounts of explosives by contacting sample surfaces directly.

Officials of the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division in Indian Head, Md., have released a source-sought notice (N0017415SS001) for the Trace Explosive Detection Systems project.

This initiative seeks to gather ideas and technologies for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) systems capable of detecting trace amounts of explosives via direct contact with the sample surface.

Navy experts primarily are interested in non-vapor-collection detection capabilities able to detect commercial and military explosives; as well as home-made explosives like urea nitrate and TATP, ammonium nitrate mixtures, and potassium chlorate mixtures. These contact-detection technologies should be able to work indoors and outside.

Explosives-detection experts want these technologies for finding explosive materials on a variety of surfaces -- especially at entry-control points. Submissions should involve technologies for security or military personnel, not analytical laboratories.
