Labor Day's over; it's time to drop the sandals and pick up those wingtips

Labor Day weekend always has a bitter-sweet feel; it's the last, frantic period in which we try to squeeze out those last summer delights -- some of the last barbecues of the season, the last trips to the seashore, some of those last woodland hikes before the weather turns cold and we hunker down for the fall and winter business seasons.

Despite our best efforts, however, we all know what lies ahead: trade shows, business meetings, sales deadlines, new product introductions ... back to business as usual, in other words.

Temperatures will be in the 90s today in the Northeast, as they will be also in the South and the Midwest. It still feels like summer, but there are big changes coming. The shadows are getting longer, and it won't be but a couple of weeks before the weather starts turning chilly.

In New England we still remember last year's brutal winter, and look with dread at the snow blowers mocking us from their corners of garages, and the first color of the leaves changing on the trees.

Now that Labor Day is over, we're getting ready to turn it up a notch to keep pace with quickening fall schedules and events. Things won't slow down again until late November with Thanksgiving, and Christmas after that.

It's difficult to say goodbye to summer and to steel ourselves for the upcoming busy fall. Still, we can cheer ourselves with the knowledge that we're not in it alone. So many of us are in the same boat.

Welcome to fall; here we go again.
