DULUTH, Ga. — A new line of four-megapixel 20-by-20-inch active-matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs) from BarcoView Inc. of Duluth, Ga., is aiming at air traffic control applications as an alternative to conventional cathode ray tube (CRT) displays.

Although BarcoView officials do not state this explicitly, the displays were unveiled in this country at the conference of the Air Traffic Control Association held Oct. 23-24 in Atlantic City, N.J.

BarcoView leaders consider these displays to be replacements for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's current line of 20-inch displays bought in the 1980s from Sony of Japan employing Trinitron technology. Barco officials said they were still working on pricing as of mid-October.

The LCDs come from Samsung Electronics Ltd. of Korea. BarcoView officials claim the 2048-by-2048-element displays have enhanced brightness and improved viewing angles to counteract eye fatigue common in air traffic control applications — even in poor ambient light. The new line is designated Isis, which is for the Egyptian goddess of agriculture and is not an acronym.

The Isis line of flat panels comes in four versions. A chassis version and a panel-mount version for available for integration into new console designs. A monitor replacement version offers form, fit, and function replacement for CRTs. A desktop version, designed for use on horizontal surfaces without additional mechanical support, can be used for situations that do not require a console environment.

Each display contains three input module bays that designers can configure with a combination of Barco digital and analog input modules. The analog input is compatible with all standard 2048-by-2048-pixel graphics adapters. The digital input is compatible with the Barco PVS 5600D series graphics adapters.
