CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Engineers at Rockwell Collins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are offering a wireless data communications tool that enables personal computers and other data-input devices to exchange text and pictures at fast data rates over HF radio links.
In fact company officials say the product, HF Messenger, sends and receives data over HF links as quickly as today's satellite data links. Company leaders are aiming the device primarily at ground, tactical airborne, and military HF e-mail applications.
HF radio, which operates on frequencies between 2 and 30 MHz, is notable for its long range, which its radio waves achieve by hugging the earth, and by bouncing off a layer of the atmosphere called the ionosphere.
HF Messenger comes with drivers for use with Collins HF radios, and can work with automatic link establishment functions - better known as ALE.
