Lockheed Q-70 system to go on Sea Based Battle Lab

EGAN, Minn. - The Sea Based Battle Lab on the command ship USS Coronado (AGF 11) is using two prototype AN/UYQ-70 mission essential variant (MEV) servers from Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems in Eagan, Minn.

Lockheed engineers delivered the MEVs to the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) in San Diego. Engineers developed the MEV as part of a cooperative technology effort between Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) program executive office for expeditionary warfare and SPAWAR advanced concepts and technologies. Units installed aboard the Coronado will demonstrate advanced information system architectures and total ownership cost reduction through savings in acquisition cost, system administration, and maintenance, Lockheed officials claim. The full Q-70 support infrastructure maintains the MEV, including logistics support and ongoing technology insertion.

The same team of engineers that designed the Q-70s currently fielded aboard surface combatants, submarines, and aircraft developed the MEV, Lockheed officials say. The MEV is a lower cost variant designed to host commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment supporting ship functions in a ruggedized cabinet. The MEV has benefited from the Q-70 program's five-year history of specification, design, implementation, and operational installation of COTS-based tactical equipment. During that time, engineers at Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Egan have delivered more than 1,500 AN/UYQ-70 units to the U.S. Navy, Lockheed officials claim.
