SAN DIEGO — The emerging process of using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and software in defense, commercial aviation, and space electronic systems is the subject of a keynote address at the COTScon West 2001 conference and exhibition Dec. 4 and 5 at the San Diego Concourse in San Diego.
Gregory E. Saunders, director of the U.S. Defense Standardization Office at Fort Belvoir, Va., is the conference keynote speaker. Saunders, who delivered the keynote address at the first-ever COTScon conference, will concentrate on the process of moving forward with COTS-based designs, or more to the point, where designers go from here.
The Defense Standardization office seeks to coordinate efforts of government, industry, and academia to implement COTS components and software most effectively and efficiently in military and aerospace electronic systems.
One major highlight of the conference will be a detailed presentation of the use of COTS components in the Boeing version of the future Joint Strike Fighter. Of equal importance is a presentation detailing the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Polymorphous Computing Architectures.
An important panel discussion featuring well-known industry experts will center on the new wave of switched fabrics and interconnects. Moderator of the panel will be Ray Alderman, executive director of the VME International Trade Association in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Also on tap at COTScon West 2001 will be Industry discussions on multiprocessing computer fabrics, layered real-time operating systems, using programmable hardware to beat the obsolescence problem, how to comply with MIL-STD-461E, trends in vibration and shock isolation, and improving the performance of real-time digital signal processing.
COTScon West 2001, the seventh of PennWell's highly successful COTScon programs, is for engineers, engineering managers, program managers, executive managers, prime contractors, subcontractors, platform integrators, and subsystems manufacturers.
