Halifax, Nova Scotia — Systems designers at Navitrak International Corp. needed color microdisplays for their new rugged handheld, global positioning system (GPS)-based, moving map display called Digital Navigation Assistant. They found their solution from Kopin Corp. of Taunton, Mass.
Kopin officials are supplying their company's CyberDisplay 320C color microdisplay for the Navitrak Digital Navigation Assistant, which was unveiled at the recent COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas.
The Digital Navigation Assistant has a digital map display equivalent to that produced by a 20-inch cathode ray tube monitor viewed from a distance of five feet, Kopin officials say.
Kopin's CyberDisplay products have a 0.24-inch and 0.38-inch diagonal transmissive active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCDs) with pixel resolutions of 320 by 240 pixels (QVGA) and 640 by 480 pixels (VGA), respectively.
Along with displaying standard text and graphics, the CyberDisplay 320C operates at video speeds and consumes less than 100 milliwatts of power, including the backlight, company officials say.
