Universal avionics digital interface

Officials of BMC Communications Corp. in Westbury, N.Y., are offering their Universal Avionics Digital Interface (UADI), a plug-and-run device that enables engineers to program firmware in the field through a computer.

The UADI supports communications protocols MIL-STD-1553 dual-redundant interface, ARINC 708/453, ARINC two-wire/six-wire protocols such as 429/575/571/572/581/582/615/, and RS-232/422.

The avionics refurbishing business is growing, yet one of the compatibility requirements for new avionics equipment calls for meeting either STANAG 3838 or MIL-STD-1553 standard. Many companies need to keep old equipment and be able to integrate that equipment into new systems that use these protocols.

The UADI includes eight analog inputs with 12-bit resolution and 16 general I/O with upgradeable capabilities, and operates from a 5-20 volt power supply. The 7-by-9-by 1 1/4-inch rugged enclosure is compatible with the temperature, humidity, and vibration standards of MIL-STD-810E and EMI MIL-STD-416, and meets all test requirements for helicopters.

VME card for motor drive power control

Officials of North Atlantic Industries (NAI) in Bohemia, N.Y., are offering a conduction-cooled, dual, four-quadrant, bidirectional VME card to control power to DC motors, called the 64PW3.

The card has two PWM motor drives, each of which accepts 65 volts of DC power input and provides a 5-amp maximum, continuous current output to a DC motor. The 64PW3 offers continuous background self-testing, as well as optional RS-422, A-D, D-A, or dual R-D interfaces.

The 64PW3 motor drives can operate for either current control or voltage control via the VME bus. The card controls motors with the optional RS-422 serial data link. Both output drives shut down via a discrete opto-isolated logic input to the card. The 64PW3 operates over temperatures ranging from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius, and has 800-hertz open-loop bandwidth, short-circuit protected outputs, and watchdog timer.

For more information, contact NAI online at www.naii.com.

VME64 bus-to-bus adapters

Officials of SBS Technologies in Albuquerque, N.M., are offering a family of VME64 bus-to-bus adapters, the SBS 8x0 series, which connect two buses: one VME64 with another VME64, or a VME64 with a PCI, PMC, or CompactPCI bus.

These adapters, which effectively create one virtual bus, create a PCI mezzanine card (PMC) that can access a remote VME bus. These adapters are for connecting VME systems to a PC, workstation, or CompactPCI system, and can eliminate the need for a single-board computer or enable a VME user to migrate to another technology while preserving the existing VMEbus investment. The adapters allow each system's bus to operate independently and affect bus bandwidth only when one system makes a memory or I/O reference to another.

Another feature involves memory-mapping RAM, which allows systems designers to map any memory location on the VME bus in the address space of the other bus. A processor on one bus can use a programmed I/O to read and write a remote memory location transparently, just as if it were a local bus access with as little as 2 microseconds of latency.

For more information, contact SBS online at www.sbs.com.

Add-on network-management software for the TCP/IP stack

CMX Systems in Jacksonville, Fla., is offering simple network-management protocol (SNMP) add-on software for the CMX-MicroNet TCP/IP stack. The CMX-MicroNet is a small-footprint TCP/IP software stack that provides internetworking-connectivity tools to designers working with eight-bit, 16-bit, and digital signal processors (DSPs).

CMX-MicroNet's SNMP add-on is a memory-efficient, portable software-development kit for embedded-systems developers requiring SNMP V1 or SNMP V2c for their applications running on processors with limited memory resources. CMX-MicroNet's SNMP is suitable for inclusion in internal memory of single-chip processor designs already supported by CMX-MicroNet. Other SNMP agents are for network elements such as routers, resulting in unnecessarily large implementations for assets or appliances.

Officials of PennEngineering Fastening Technologies in Danboro, Pa., are offering their PEM Type PFC4 self-clinching stainless-steel panel fasteners that install "flush" on one side into thin stainless-steel sheets.

This type (400 Series stainless steel) can be installed permanently in stainless sheets as hard as HRB 88 hardness on the Rockwell "B" scale. The 400 Series also meets UL 1950 "service-area access" requirements to allow subsequent access to an assembly. The side of the sheet opposite installation remains flush. These fasteners are for attaching stainless sheets as thin as 0.060 inches and for applications requiring high corrosion resistance. The PEM Type PFC4 fasteners have a captive-screw design to keep hardware to a minimum, promote quick installation, and eliminate risk of loose parts falling out and damaging components. A Phillips recess is standard.

High-speed USB device for JTAG/BDM debugging

Macraigor Systems LLC in Brookline Village, Mass., is offering usbDemon, a high-speed universal serial bus (USB) device for JTAG (IEEE Standard 1149.1) or BDM (background debug mode) that provides embedded systems developers with an interface for target on-chip debug (OCD). The usbDemon applications programming interface is compatible with software debuggers like the GNU tools suite (GCC, GAS, and GDB). The usbDemon operates as a converter of JTAG commands. The Windows host PC communicates with usbDemon via the industry-standard USB protocol to the proper OCD signals required by the target. The host port can be JTAG, E-JTAG, OnCE, COP, BDM, or any of several other types of connections. A dedicated JTAG controller increases throughput performance. For example, binary files can be downloaded to an XScale target at 180 kilobytes per second and the MPC88560 at up to 250 Kbytes per second, company officials say. With higher clock speeds, information is transmitted and received from the target board more efficiently for setting breakpoints, single stepping, tracing, diagnosing problems and other target communications.
