Designers at EADS-CASA (the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company) in Paris needed an electrical power generation system for the Airbus A400M military transport aircraft.

They found a solution with Aerolec, a joint venture between Goodrich Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., and Thales Group in Alexandria, Va.

Aerolec will supply EADS-CASA with the main and auxiliary power unit electric generators for the aircraft’s electrical power generation system.

The system includes Goodrich’s variable-frequency generators and control units. First applied commercially on the Airbus A380, variable frequency is a technology breakthrough in power generation for aircraft, with reduced operating costs, lower weight, and increased reliability compared to previous constant frequency systems.
