Engineers with the Royal Danish Air Force needed a data recorder to record ground-to-air and air-to-ground radio conversations. They found a solution with Advanced Integrated Recorder (AIR) from Formation, Inc., Moorestown, N.J.

The AIR systems will fulfill the Air Force’s legal voice recording requirements by recording Ground/Air/Ground communications via VHF and UHF radios, as well as ground communications (telephone) lines.

After delivery, the systems will be used at six air bases in Denmark. The units must achieve online hard disk storage of 31 days’ voice communications, providing instant access to critical information and eliminating the labor and inconvenience of daily tape changes. The systems will be fully redundant to avoid any possible single points of failure, and will be synchronized to Global Positioning System (GPS) to precisely log the timing of any key events. Additional requirements include expandability for future connections with digital radios, digital telephones, and the Danish Forces’ Wide Area Network (WAN).

AIR configurations range from a stand-alone 1U (1.75 inch) server with as few as 12 voice channels, to a networked storage system supporting over 1000 screen, data and voice channels. For more information, see www.formation.com.
