Engineers at ARINC Inc. in Annapolis, Md., needed a computer server to run their AeroMobile in-flight phone system. They found a solution with the Airborne Telephony Server (ATS) from VT Miltope in Hope Hull, Ala.

The ATS is a ruggedized server that will act as the on-board hub for passengers using the AeroMobile service. ARINC and its partner, Telenor of Oslo, Norway, will launch the phone service this fall. It will use the ATS to handle bandwidth-intensive tasks such as shared delivery of mobile cellular, e-mail, Internet, and IFE services in the aircraft cabin.

“ARINC selected the Miltope ATS for its superior performance and expansion capability,” stated John Little, ARINC technical director for Europe, Middle East, and Africa. “The ATS will efficiently handle AeroMobile service now, and can easily handle Internet and data services in the future with Inmarsat Swift64 or SwiftBroadband SATCOM upgrades.”

A subsidiary of Vision Technologies Systems, VT Miltope makes communications hardware for military and commercial uses, including servers for multimedia, communications, and data applications. For more information, see www.miltope.com.
