Engineers with the U.S. Marine Corps needed a battlefield survey and navigation tool. They found a solution with L-3 Space & Navigation in Budd Lake, N.J.

L-3 won a production order for the Improved Position and Azimuth Determining System (IPADS), a free inertial high accuracy system. L-3 designed IPADS for Army and Marine survey needs, including all-weather performance, and lightweight, rugged durability. It offers communication through either a dual channel serial PCMCIA Tactical Communications Interface Modem (SP-TCIM) or RS-232 data bus, and uses embedded BIT/BITE.

The contract came from the Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) in Warren, Mich., to support the Marine Corps high-performance indirect fire support requirements.

L-3 Space & Navigation makes inertial instruments and integrated fire control systems, as well as pointing, guidance, control and positioning equipment for satellites, artillery and launch vehicles serving the military, commercial and government markets.
