Engineers with the U.S. Army needed better night-vision capability for soldiers on dark or foggy battlefields. They found a solution with Enhanced Night Vision Goggles (ENVGs) from ITT Industries Night Vision in Roanoke, Va.
Awarding the contract was the Army Research, Development & Engineering Command Acquisition Center, Unique Missions Division, at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. It has a potential value of $560 million over five years.
The ENVG optically combines an image intensification (I2) image and next-generation infrared (IR) image, allowing for improved mobility and situational awareness through clear target identification and improved target detection.
ITT will provide the image-intensification technology, while its partner Raytheon, of Waltham, Mass., supplies infrared components.
The initial units are for Program Executive Office Soldier, to qualify the ENVG for field use. Testing is expected to last through April 2006. For more information, see www.itt.com.
