Engineers at Acme Worldwide Enterprises in Albuquerque, N.M., needed a graphics generator to upgrade a flight simulator. They were designing the training program for fueling boom operators on the U.S. Air Force KC-10 tanker aircraft.

They found a solution with the Independence Image Generator (IG) from Quantum3D San Jose, Calif.

Acme used two Independence IGs-as well as their GeoScapeSE databases-in Boom Operator Trainer (BOT) programs, used by airmen at Travis and McGuire Air Force Bases to practice airborne refueling.

Quantum3D is also working with Acme to enhance visual effects, providing real-time shadows for the boom and precision collision detection techniques to simulate the way the refueling boom interacts with the tanker and fighter aircraft.

“In-air-refueling is a very difficult and dangerous operation, so providing high fidelity training for KC-10 Boom Operators is truly a mission critical activity,” said Ross Q. Smith, Quantum3D cofounder and president. Quantum3D also provides Independence IGs in simulation programs for the F-15E MTC, F/A-22 ACS, F-35 ACS, F-35 Sensor, and B-2 PES.
