Thales Computers in Raleigh, N.C., is offering a dual-G5 VME system for cutting-edge avionics and military embedded applications called the EasyG5. It offers an industrial version of the IBM Power Architecture in a size and configuration for avionics applications. The EasyG5 offers the performance and flexibility of a dual PowerPC 970 architecture in a rugged, compact form factor. The Power Architecture is a hardware-development platform and instruction set that enables different components on the same microprocessor to work together. The choice of a microprocessor for avionics products is of utmost importance regarding direct consequences on various kinds of functional features. Thales selected the Power Architecture for the EasyG5 systems because of its ability to integrate an increasing number of applications and functions; its computation power balanced with energy consumption and thermal requirements; and its weight and volume limitations inherent to airborne technology.
