Naval engineers at IHI Marine United in Tokyo needed software tools to design ships for the Japanese navy. They found a solution with the NX and Teamcenter applications from UGS in Plano, Texas.

IHI designers will use the software to accelerate digital development of a new helicopter-carrying destroyer (DDH), which will be one of the largest naval ships in Japan, with a displacement of 13,500 tons. The first ship is to be completed in March 2009.

NX is the UGS digital product development software, and Teamcenter is product knowledge management and collaboration software. IHI users will deploy them throughout the DDH program as the standard system for development, including digital product development and enterprise knowledge management solutions.

UGS is a provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services with nearly 4 million licensed seats and 42,000 clients worldwide. Other shipbuilding customers using Teamcenter PLM today include: Blohm + Voss, Nordseewerke, Lurs sen, Feadship and Howaldtswerke- Deutsche Werft AG. Headquartered in Plano, Texas, the company promotes openness and standardization and works collaboratively with its clients in creating enterprise solutions. For more information, see www.ugs.com.
