Engineers at Honeywell International, Morristown, N.J., needed an operating system to run flight-critical software on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner commercial passenger jet.

They found a solution with Integrity-178B from Green Hills Software, Santa Barbara, Calif.

The airplane will use Integrity for its flight control electronics, including the autopilot and the fly-by-wire control surfaces. Engineers at Boeing subcontractor Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, also chose Integrity for the plane, using it for the surveillance system for traffic, terrain, and weather warnings. And engineers in the Digital System Sciences group of Vibro-Meter, Manchester, N.H., chose Integrity for the vibration monitoring system in the aircraft’s jet engines.

“The selection of INTEGRITY-178B by multiple 787 suppliers for a diverse range of applications demonstrates Green Hills Software’s leadership in the avionics operating systems market,” said Dan O’Dowd, chief executive officer of Green Hills Software. “More and more manufacturers are recognizing that they can reduce the time, cost and risk of avionics software development and certification by taking advantage of Green Hills Software’s unique capabilities.”

Green Hills’ Integrity-178B is designed to comply with the aviation industry standard ARINC 653-1 interface, and has been certified to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s most stringent standard for flight-critical avionics systems: RTCA/DO-178B Level A. Other aircraft using the Integrity-178B operating system include the Airbus A380, Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, F/A-22, Eurofighter Typhoon, Boeing X-45C Joint Unmanned Combat Air Systems, Sikorsky S-92 helicopter, Lockheed Martin F-16, Airbus A400M military transport, Boeing C-17, Boeing B-1B, and Boeing B-52.
