MPB Communications Inc. in Montreal is releasing a series of miniature ytterbium fiber lasers called the YFL-µ series. These lasers provide more than 2 watts of output power at a wavelength between 1060 and 1160 nanometers. The laser features a wall-plug efficiency of 20 percent and measures 105 millimeters long by 75 millimeters wide by 27 millimeters high. It has a central processor and a serial port interface, providing a graphical user interface to control and monitor the unit. Polarized and unpolarized versions are available. Based on an all-fiber design, the YFL-µ lasers consist entirely of a fusion-spliced optical train, thus eliminating the possibility of cavity misalignment due to the influence of thermal or vibrational perturbations. The laser is essentially maintenance free and highly reliable. The laser is for airborne and mobile deployments. Applications include target designation, spectroscopy, remote sensing, and second harmonic generation. For more information contact MPB online at www.mpbc.ca.
