Engineers at General Dynamics C4 Systems in Scottsdale, Ariz., in their development of multifunction radios for the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program, were in need of a flexible, yet efficient communications platform.

They found a solution in Xilinx Inc.’s Virtex-4 Platform field-programmable gate array (FPGA).

General Dynamics C4 Systems opted for the Vertex-4 system given its low-power modem digital signal-processing design, that enables it to handle complex waveforms. Moreover, Xilinx’s Virtex-4 FPGAs offer critical modem functionality that is well suited to the new handheld, small- form-fit radio.

Xilinx’s Virtex-4 product line boasts three platforms and 17 devices. For more information, visit www.xilinx.com.
