Army incorporates Rockwell Collins helmet-mounted display in AVCATT

Professionals at the U.S. Army Program Executive Office of Simulation Training and Instrumentation in Orlando, Fla., required an effective simulation and mission rehearsal system with which to train military personnel.

They found the optimal solution at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Army officials awarded the company a $23.8 million contract as part of the Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer (AVCATT) Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) modification and upgrade program.

AVCATT is a transportable, virtual simulation training system designed to provide Army aviators with realistic, high-intensity training exercises and mission rehearsals. Additionally, pilots can take advantage of networked training, whereby multiple simulations are combined in a collective, simulated-battlefield environment.

According to the contract, Rockwell Collins engineers will deliver the SimEye SR100A HMD, a compact, lightweight, high-resolution upgrade to the SimEye XL100A currently used in AVCATT. For more information, visit Rockwell Collins online at www.rockwellcollins.com.
