Engineers at DataPath Inc., a global telecommunication systems integrator based in Duluth, Ga., specializing in satellite Earth terminals and networks such as the Joint Network Node and Worldwide Satellite Systems programs, sought a communications solution for military combat vehicles. They found a solution in ViaSat Inc.’s LinkWay satellite-communications networking equipment, for which the company placed a $5.2 million order.

Designed to provide mobile military communications, LinkWay small-aperture terminals (VSATs) have been designated a Current Force Modem, a solution that assists in the U.S. Department of Defense’s plan to accelerate the adoption of new technology to enable more modular, mobile forces. ViaSat commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) satellite networking equipment is being integrated into compact, trailer-based satellite terminals for sustained and reliable telecommunications in the field.

The LinkWay system enables direct connections between battalion and brigade command locations without the need of a central hub. The system uses ViaSat Dynamic Bandwidth Resource Allocation technology to reduce satellite bandwidth costs through automatic, adaptive assignment and advanced coding.

ViaSat is headquartered in San Diego. For more information, visit ViaSat online at www.viasat.com.
